This superb field or botanical "Cary-Gould" type microscope was manufactured by "Carpenter & Westley" around 1840, and it comes in it's fitted mahogany case with a number of accessories.There are no cracks or chips to the brass that I can find and the microscope has retained much of its' original lacquering, however, there are the usual scuffs and marks that you expect from a well used item of this age.As you would expect from a well engineered microscope it all fits together well. T...he microscope has three 'stacking' lenses, two have damage to the edges and thread, however, they still screw together well. Two are numbered "1 & 2".The mirror is free from any cracks or chips and revolves its' cradle nicely.The microscope moves up and down smoothly with a rack and pinnion system, however, it is a little loose as it nears the bottom.The stand screws in to the lid well.The microscope has its' forceps, bull's eye lens, stage insert and a live well.There are no major cracks or splits to the fitted and lined mahogany case and the pieces all fit well in to the internal compartments.The microscope measures approximately, 25 cm (9 3/4 inches) tall, not including the case.
