- RARE Peter Shire Ceramic Teapot Pottery- Circa 1994. AUCTION:Offering a rare form from Peter Shire. Most of his works were geometrical and seemed to challenge gravity, but in the mid 1990’s he made a limited number of these forms whereby he ventured away from solid shapes and contrasting colors to feature unique and masterful pastel color combinations in a whimsical design. Signed EXP on base.
CONDITION: Low starting price, and “buy it now” set in line with damage from a pr...evious owner. The handle was previously broken and re-applied as shown in four photos.
ABOUT Peter Shire:Peter Shire (American, b. 1947) is a sculptor, furniture maker, ceramicist and jeweler. He was born in Los Angeles, where he still resides and where he has created several public art works. Shire was a member of the Memphis Group, a design and architecture group founded in Milan in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass; its fans include the fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. The Memphis Group exhibited annually until its disbandment in 1988, mainly one-off pieces with unconventional shapes, brightly colored and patterned surfaces, and a cartoonish bent. Shire produced a limited edition jewelry collection in 1985 with Acme Studios, which went on to work with other members of the Memphis Group on a larger jewelry collection. Like all the pieces produced by Acme in collaboration with Memphis artists, Shire’s playful, pastel-hued, Pop Art-inspired pieces are no longer in production and all the tools and materials used to produce them have been destroyed.
