Item information Item description : A beautiful Art Deco bowl, decorated in enamel, gold and silver Towards the end of the samurai period in Japan, Ichizaemon Morimura, a merchant, witnessed large outflows of gold from Japan to overseas. Preached by&n...bsp; Yukichi Fukuzawa, a famous scholar of Western studies, that "in order to get gold back to Japan, we must get hold of foreign currencies by export trade", Ichizaemon made a resolution to start overseas trading by himself for his country. In 1876, Baron Ichizaemon set up a trading firm called "Morimura Gumi" and sent his brother, Toyo, to New York to open an imported goods store, "Morimura Brothers". It was the start of their overseas trading and the first step into Noritake's history. By 1904 Ichizaemon Morimura built his own factory in a little village named Noritake just outside of Nagoya.
Six years later, in 1910, the first china products from the new company, called Nippon Toki Kaisha, left Japan for the U.S.
On old marks the "M" inside the wreath stand for Morimura. In 1941 the export offices were closed and the M was changed to an "N" as in Noritake. In 1981 the company officially changed its name to Noritake Company. The number of known different Noritake marks are more then 400.
