There are three letters in this small grouping from what appears to be two different Union Officers / Soldiers.
There is a p...air of letters from 1863 from Memphis, TN sent to "Friend Hattie". In one of the letters the soldier writes, "I expect soon to hear of a great battle at Vixburg, the result of which God alone can forsee.". He continues on to write, "I enlisted in this war from principle. Not from any malice borne the Southern People or their Institutions.". Both of the 1863 letters are concluded with the soldier's address: In care of Capt. D. P. Allen Commissary of Subsistence & Office Assist. Adjutant Dist. of Memphis, TN.
The 1864 letter is sent to the officer's wife from Nashville, TN. The letter mentions a Captain Mills, Capt. Burke, the young officer's intentions of proving himself "I intend to be a model Lieut and "one of the best -- in the service" as my brothers in Toledo told me when I left home." and is a letter of love to his wife.
All of the letters have similar wear, fading and light discoloration in parts.
