John Mare Factory1816 - 1825Italian PatternTransfer printed under glazePearlwareClear Print9 7/8" Dinner Plate
Antique pearlware plate printed with a well executed example of the Italian pattern from John Mare’s factory in Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire. Mare’s name is impressed into the back of the plate using simple capital letters as if using printer’s type (see all photos). The Italian pattern was first produced by Spode in 1816, quickly gained popularity and was subsequently copied by several other British firms in Staffordshire as well as beyond. The plate listed here dates from between 1816 up to 1825 since it has John Mare’s factory mark.
The source of the Italian pattern is well established. Coysh and Henrywood (Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880; Volume I edition 1993A, pages 191-192) note that the central scene of ruins along a river with cows in the foreground and several people standing on the river’s bank is copied from a ink and wash drawing attributed to Frederick de Moucheron, a 17th century Dutch artist (1638-86; ibid. see page 192 for a copy of Moucheron’s original drawing). The plate offered here is not from the Spode factory, but is instead from Mare’s pottery which was located only about 1 km away from the Spode factory. Mare produced creamware and pearlware dishes, plates and teawares from about 1802 to 1825. And as noted above, the Italian pattern was not produced until 1816 based on archival information left behind at the Spode works.
The scene on this plate is a romanticized version of the past with farm animals, peasants and fantastic ruins in a rural setting. Farther down the river on the opposite bank are a few simple structures indicating a small village with a man and woman conversing nearby (see all photos). Off in the distance is a tall medieval-looking tower also abandoned and beginning to fall into ruins. Other characters occupy the scene with a seated figure sitting on a blocky stone possibly reading a book on the bank closest to the viewer, while a dog is tending to some sheep at rest in the lower right foreground.
The unique border motif on this plate is typically the motif found in combination with the Italian pattern. It is reminiscent of colorful Imari porcelain Brocaded patterns from nearly 100 years before this plate was produced. Although rendered in blue and white, some Italian pattern plates and dishes were also clobbered in red over the glaze to accent the intricate border design. Drakard and Holdway note that the border motif is a direct copy of Chinese porcelain original marly motif (David Drakard and Paul Holdway’s ‘Spode Transfer Printed Ware 1784 to 1833' published in 2002 by Antiques Collectors’ Club, see page 214 under reference P710 for Italian).
Finally, the quality of the engraving on the master copper plate that produced this transfer print is well above average. Although just cobalt blue pigment was used, there are at least four distinct shades of blue present: a dark blackish blue, dark blue, medium blue and two shades of light blue (see all photos). Some of the pattern is line engraved while other parts of the pattern are probably achieved by reworking an acid etched section of the copper plate in order to give an even tonal quality to the blue. Of importance, there is no stipple punched motifs in the design. So if you are looking for a nice antique blue and white printed pearlware plate from nearly 200 years ago, then do consider this one while it is still available.
