It is recognized by its factory mark, the three wavy ...lines above eachother, symbolizing Denmark’s three straits: Storebælt, Lillebælt and Øresund.Starting in the 17th century, Europeans were fascinated bythe blue & white porcelain exported from China. The Royal Copenhagenmanufactory's operations began in a converted post office in 1775. It wasfounded by chemist Frantz Heinrich Muller who was given a 50-year monopoly tocreate porcelain. The first pieces manufactured were dining services for theroyal family. In 1790, Royal Copenhagen brought out its now famous Flora Danica‘Blue Fluted’ dinner service, with gilded edge and Danish flora motifs, andRoyal Copenhagen held a monopoly on the "Blue Fluted" name. Stilltoday, the classic blue floral pattern is produced just as it was centuriesago, each piece of porcelain treated as a piece of art, carefully painted byhand.
