The letter was written to a "Mr. Sturgis".
I believe that this man was a member of the family of Nathaniel Russell Sturgis, Sr. (1805-1887). However, I do not know which member of thefamily it was. In the letter, she discusses herplans to take a trip with her grandchildren to St. Andrews, Scotland.
The letter is handwritten in ink on both sides of
a sheet of paper, with her address written at the top (3 Chesterfield St., Mayfair).
The date is given as July 31, but no year is stated. However, she mentions her grandchildren in the letter, so my guess is that the letter was written in the 1860sor 1870s.
Unfolded, the letter is about 10" by 8". It is in good condition, with creases whereit has been folded, and some general wear.
