Original Description:
This is a wonderful, original document dated 1718, where William Bates of Newport, Rhode Island, master of the Brigantine George, on a journey from Amsterdam, Holland backto Newport. Seems John Papillon, had financed the ship, to include all anchors, masts, etc...to go from Amsterdam to London, then to Newport. Apparently, John Papillion died at some point during the time of this voyage....his widow, Bridget Papillion, wants to be paid what was owed to her husband from William Mates an...d is suing for payment....signed at left margin by Charles Church and at bottom of second page by Ebenezer Brenton and Nathaniel Blagrove. Document is 8x14, folds, acid free. archival tape used on separations....an interesting document, in overall good condition.Major Ebenezer Brenton born at Swansey, 1687. died about 1766, probably in South Kingstown where his will was proved. He belonged to Bristol county, and was appointed judge of the Bristol county Court of Common Pleas in 1702, and held office until 1708. He was also register of probate from 1715 to 1721. He gave his farm of 214 acres, near Worden's pond, to Martin Howard, Jr. (who had been the husband of his daughter Ann, deceased, ) for life, and then to Ann Howard, his grand-daughter.Nathaniel Blagrove (1662-1744) was appointed judge of the Bristol county Common Pleas Court in 1723-4, and served one year. He was judge of probate of Bristol county from 1733 to 1747.Bridget Papillion (Bosworth)Birthdate: October 29, 1686...Birthplace: Bristol, Bristol, RI .....Charles Church, (1682-1746) son of Colonel Benjamin Church, married at Bristol, RI. and he and Hannah were members of the Congregational Church.  He was Lieut. when he married, Capt. when he was baptized, and Col. when his daughter Mary married in 1746. These titles were not complimentary merely for he accompanied his distinguished father on two of his expeditions against the French and Indians.
