4x5" photo of a ship called the Kinugawa Maru, one of the losers in the battle for Guadalcanal. During the pivotal Battles of Savo Island, the Japanese Navy attempted to rush reinforcements through "the Slot" from their bases at one end of the Solomon Islands to the scene of the main com...bat on Guadalcanal. With battleships slugging it out in torpedo-infested waters, the transport ships had to make a near suicidal dash to get to shore to drop off their troops. Several did not make it, but this one and a couple others did. Charging up on the beach a little after 4am, all the Japanese left the ship because by 5am, our gunners had turned it into a furnace, blazing from stem to stern. The crew scrambled off and joined the infantry fighting on the island, but in a twist of fate, US Marines found their encampment and wiped all 75 crewmen out, there were no survivors at all from the ship. This ship proved sturdier than she looked and remains in shallow water to this day, a popular spot for scuba dives.
Rare image of vessels during wartime (taking such photos was usually not allowed). No caption on the back, nice photo, not a reprint.
