I used to collect photos and military documents, and I donated a huge amount to museums - the ones left over are duplicates or lessor-quality items than my donations. Passing on history:
4x5" photo of a ship called LSM(R)-197 -- that means "Landing Ship, Medium, Rocket-equipped", so it was intended as both an assault craft to land on the beach, as well as a stand-off bombardment ship, built for the invasion of Japan. This image shows the ship bombarding Okinawa as it app...roached the shore - after it unloaded, it was assigned the incredibly hazardous duty of radar picket (MANY ships struck by Kamikazes on radar picket duty). Rare image of vessels during wartime (taking such photos was not allowed). No caption on the back, nice photo, not a reprint.
