Hi ThereBefore bidding on, or buying any item from me, please check my feedback and bid/buy with the utmost confidence. If you buy this clock from me, you will receive a C/D or pen drive with 117 photos of the work I have carried out on the movement and the case, along with a write up of the work seen in the photos. Some of these pictures can be seen in this listing. I take great pride in my work, which I hope can be seen in the finished product. At the end of this listing is some... interesting information I have gleaned for you to read on the Garrard Company. The full asking price includes delivery and set up of this clock within a hundred mile radius of Congleton. Please read the note towards the bottom of this listing. To my mind, Garrard clocks are the finest and best clock we have ever produced in this country. They were very expensive for clocks in there day and were therefore only brought by the upper classes of the time. On offer here is a lovely late 1930s Garrard Westminster mantel clock. This clock has been extensively restored, serviced and cleaned by myself. I have tried to do this restoration to a high standard while still trying to keep the character of the clock. This clock is an eight day and should therefore be wound every 7 days. The Westminster chimes every 15 minutes building up to the full chime on the hour followed by the striking of the hour. This can be silenced. The medium/dark coloured oak veneered case dimensions are 11 3/4” wide by 9” high and 5” deep.  For a clock around 80 years old and because of the service it has undergone runs, chimes and strikes very well. The movement was dirty and in need of a good service and a good clean. The clock plates were worn in 6 places and needed re-bushing. More serious was one of the wheels had a snapped pivot that needed replacing and during testing one of the springs snapped. This work is shown in the photo dairy which you will receive. The case was and is, in good condition. A lot of these early British as well as German clocks used silver dials, which often don’t stand the test of time so well. The face on this clock is in good condition for its age. Please do bear in mind that this is an old clock and therefore although in good condition now, there are some imperfections related to its age. I have not over repaired it as I feel this would spoil the character of the clock.  The face of the clock will show age related wear, but is in my opinion in above average condition for a clock this old. This clock comes with an old key, but it is not a Garrard key. I have seen them come up on eBay and the price is normally around £15 to £20. As with all my clocks, the buyer will receive my own care sheets so that you will get the most out of the clock. Covering four sheets of A4, these pages cover everything from winding up the clock and adjusting the time, to when to have it serviced. You will receive a C/D or pen drive with a write up and 117 photos showing the work I have done on the movement and case. The care sheets will be on the C/D. If you require them printing, please let me know. Please note the following on postage:-I offer a delivery and setup service to anywhere in the UK. If you pay full price for the clock the delivery is included up to a hundred miles from Congleton. If you live further than that, the added cost for delivery is 0.30 per mile return, over the 200 miles. So the cost of delivery and setup, if you lived 150 miles from me would be £30. I will also give you a twelve month guarantee. You will see the clock running and ask any questions you might have.REMEMBER.If you do decide to pick up the clock from me or have it delivered and setup by myself I will give you a 12 month guarantee. The Garrard Company. The company that was to become Garrard was founded by George Wickes (1698–1761), who entered his mark in Goldsmiths' Hall in 1722. Wickes set up business in Threadneedle Street in the City of London in 1722; the company moved to Panton Street off Haymarket in central London in 1735 as a goldsmith and provider of jewellery and other luxury items to aristocratic patrons. Wickes was an accomplished silversmith known for his work in the rococo style, and gained the patronage of Frederick, Prince of Wales. Two apprentices of Wickes, John Parker and Edward Wakelin, purchased the company following Wickes’ retirement in 1760, replaced by John Wakelin and William Taylor in 1776. Following the death of William Taylor, Robert Garrard became a partner in the company in 1792. Garrard took sole control of the firm in 1802, with his sons Robert Garrard II, James and Sebastian succeeding him in running the company, trading as R., J., & S. Garrard (or Robert Garrard & Brothers) until James’ retirement in 1835, when the company became R & S Garrard. The company remained in the hands of the Garrard family until the death of Sebastian Henry Garrard, great-grandson of Robert Garrard senior, in 1946. The name Garrard & Company Ltd was registered in 1909, and the company moved to new premises in Albemarle Street in central London in 1911.In 1843, Queen Victoria appointed Garrard to the position of Crown Jewellers, leading to the production of numerous pieces of silverware and jewellery for the Royal Family, as well as the upkeep of the Crown Jewels. The company has dealt with a number of famous jewels, such as the Cullinan diamonds (including Cullinan I, "The Great Star of Africa"), and created such pieces as the Imperial Crown of India in 1911, the crown of Queen Mary for her coronation, and the Crown of Queen Elizabeth in 1937. In 1852, Garrard were given the responsibility of re-cutting the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond into a brilliant. In 1915, Garrard & Company were asked to manufacture precision range finders for the British Artillery as they had both the craftsmen and machinery needed. In 1915, the Garrard Engineering and Manufacturing Company were created, and later became known for its record playing turntables, ceasing operations in 1992.Garrard created the Premier League trophy.Garrard merged with the jewellery firm Asprey in 1990 to become Asprey & Garrard, moving from 112 Regent Street to premises on New Bond Street. Asprey & Garrard was bought by Prince Jefri Bolkiah, a younger brother of the Sultan of Brunei, in 1995 for £243m, and later acquired by private investors Lawrence Stroll and Silas Chou for an undisclosed sum in 2000. The company de-merged in 2002, with Garrard returning to the Albemarle Street site it first occupied in 1911. Garrard was acquired by the US private equity firm Yucaipa Companies in 2006, ending its partnership with Asprey.Jade Jagger was the creative director for the company from 2002 until being replaced by Stephen Webster in 2008.[1] The current "crown and G" logo is based on Robert Garrard's 1822 hallmark. On 15 July 2007, an announcement was made in the Court Circular, under Buckingham Palace, that Garrard & Co's services as crown jeweller were no longer required, with the reason cited being that it was simply 'time for a change'.[2] G. Collins and Sons were appointed the new Crown Jewelers although Garrard still holds a royal warrant from the Prince of Wales.[3] More recently, Garrard has been noted as being the maker of the sapphire engagement ring given by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge to his wife Catherine.[4] The ring once belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales. Please have a good look at the photos before buying and mail any questions you might have.
Finally, some personal thoughts on these old clocks.Back in the day... Clocks weren't just a decoration; families centred their lives on the time they displayed.  As a repairer, each one is definitely different and has a personality. When you think of what the world has been through since these clocks were made, my mind just boggles. Wars, natural disasters and the changing face of technology. Millions of lives born and lost, along with all their experiences. How many children learnt to tell the time using them? How many owners have these clock had? How many times have they been handed down after the owner has passed away?If only they could talk!I am passionate and obsessed about these old clocks and want to see them being passed down for future generations. While working on these old clocks I sometime come across a date and signature of a clock maker who has worked on it many years ago. For the last few years I have signed and dated all the movements I work on. This mark will only ever be found if a clock maker in the future works on it.
