FULLY AND PROPERLYRESTORED SETH THOMAS WESTMINSTER CHIME TAMBOURCASE MANTEL CLOCK, MODEL NO. 117 CHIMEOfferedfor sale in this No Reserve Auction is a Seth Thomas Model #117 ChimeWestminster Chime mantle clock. Theclock is not in any of my Seth Thomas catalogs but is identified by the tag onthe bottom of the clock. The clock has amanufacture date of 9-37 stamped into the front plate of the clock, a pictureof that is provided. The case measures 20inches long by 9....5 inches high by 6 inches deep. The entire clock is in very good conditionfor an item of this vintage. This clockhas a fully and properly restored 124 movement that plays out the Westminsterchime on the quarter-hours on four rods. The clock also strikes out the hours on a fifth rod that sounds deep andbeautiful. Clock comes with the originalbrass over lead pendulum and a quality key that fits perfectly. SETH THOMAS 124 WESTMINSTER CHIMEMOVEMENT.SethThomas developed the 124 movement in the 1920’s to be able to get a Westminsterchime movement into the smaller clock cases. The movement proved so popular that it was made up until the late1950’s. It has three separate springsthat run the time, chime, and striking functions and is fullyself-correcting. If the clock runscompletely down and the chiming sequence gets off, simply wind the clock backup and restart it. Within two hours, theclock will reset itself. The movement isdated on the front plate, this movement was built in September of 1937.WHAT MAKES A CLOCK A GOOD VALUE? The rules of economics are fairlystraightforward. Simply put, it isalmost impossible to spend a little and get a lot. Antique and vintage clocks follow these rulesas well. You can buy “As Found” clocksfor less money. Then you have to pay ashop to go through the movement and when you are done, you have spent more thanif you would have bid on the nicer clocks in the beginning. I have tried through the photos to show thebasic steps that I do in restoring these wonderful machines to their originalstate. My goal is to provide you with aquality time piece that will provide enjoyment and be a source of pride in yourhome for years to come. Equallyimportant to me is to provide you with a clock that I believe will retain itsvalue over the years. That is what Ithink constitutes real value in antique and vintage clocks. MY PHILOSOPHY ON CLOCKS AND CLOCK MOVEMENTS. Theonly way to properly repair a movement is to completely disassemble, clean andinspect all parts, and make the needed repairs by proper horoligical methods. This includes the rebushing of all worn holesand the polishing of any rough pivots. The movements are then reassembled, lubricated with a high quality clockoil and test run for 8 days. This is avery time intensive process but is the only correct way to properly reconditiona clock movement. You should expect amovement repaired in this manner to run for ten years trouble-free. I have been doing clock repair for over 36years. I apprenticed under an OregonState licensed repairman and have been a member of the National Association ofWatch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) since 1981. I go to estate sales, auctions, and searchplaces like eBay and Craigslist to find clocks that are in need ofrestoration.
