An original Civil War Confederate letter dated Camp Hatton near Blains X Roads Oct 26 1862. In one area it looks like it says, ...........I wrote you twice only and that becaus of one letter from Mount Sterling was Captured by bushwhackers..............I cannot now tell you of the sufferings of our troops as but I am satisfied the campaign was barren of good results to our cause. Many valuable lines were lost by the fatigue exposure ...and privations.......poor worn down men are still lingering who will die or be discharged. Our loss I think is greater in men than our gains by.....from the Chivalry of Kentucky. the people express great sympathy for our cause and great hatred for the Yankees...........I could have made many valuable purchases in Kentucky if i had been supply with Lincoln money or gold but the citizens closed their stores against us and refused to take Confederate money until forced to do so by order of Genl Smith and then they evaded the spirit of the order by demanding ten prices for their goods. but it was all for the best for all such purchases would have been destroyed on our retreat at Big Hill............
