CIVIL WAR LETTERThis letter was written by Perry H. Oderkirk to his sister, Hellen M. Fox. It was found in the Fox archive - described below.Pvt. James Fox (1841-1917) was born on 13 July 1841 in Camillus, Onondaga county, New York. At the time of his enlistment in Co. G, 3rd New York Light Artillery on 3 September 1864, he was a resident of Memphis, Onondaga county, New York. His parents were John Fox (1795-Aft1855) and Elizabeth Fitzgerald (1810-Aft1865), both natives of Ireland who ...came to New York State by way of Canada. James’ military records indicates he was a participant in the Battle at Kinston. He was discharged from the Battery on 20 July 1865. James was married in 1891 to Louisa Emeline Littig (1860-1910).Mentioned throughout these letters are James’ siblings, Gerald D. Fox (1830-1916), Richard (“Dick”) Fox (1840-Aft1910), Ellen Fox (1844-1932) and Thomas Fox (1847-Aft1965). These letters were all sent to Helen M. (Oderkirk) Fox (1837-1921), the wife of Gerald Fox. Helen was the daughter of Lyman B. Oderkirk (1813-1895) and Philinda Rema (1816-1902). Though most of the letters were written by James Fox of Battery G, 3rd N. Y. Artillery, a handful of them were written by Helen’s brother, Perry H. Oderkirk (1836-1906) of Battery D, 3rd New York Artillery.Ellen Fox married Allen Wright (1838-1904) on the 4th of July 1863. Richard Fox married Julia Almeda Timmerman in 1870.NOTE - This letter might be missing a page - not sure.  See the transcription.TRANSCRIPTION[Note: This letter was written by Perry H. Oderkirk to his sister Hellen Fox]Raleigh, North Carolina
April 25, [1865]Dear Sister, I again seat myself to write a few lines to you to let you know how I am a getting along. My health is good at present and I hope this will find you all enjoying the same.We are a going to stay here to do garrison duty for a spell. The most of the troops leave here tomorrow for some place—-[only] the dead knows where. I don’t and he won’t tell. The 3rd New York [Artillery] all stay here. The boys in [Battery] G are all well. We don’t know where when we shall come home but we think we will spend the 4th of uly with you and I hope we will be there sooner but we may have to stay our time out. We have got a new pleasant camp. It is on a hill. Our batteries all lay side one another so I see the boys every day. You can direct your letters to Raleigh, North Carolina, instead of Newbern, N. C. and we will get them a week sooner.I have got no letter since yours of the tenth but they say we will get one today. Hellen, write and let me know how much everything has come down since the war has played out. I wish you would buy some good cloth and make me a pair of pants and vest so I can put them on just as soon as I come home. I have got sick of blue and I don’t to wear them one minute longer than I am obliged to.Kiss my little babes. God bless those little souls. How I want to see them. Well, I must bring my letter to a close by bidding you all goodbye for this time. Write soon and all you know and a little more. From Perry H. Oderkirkto Hellen M.
