James Fox (1841-1917) was born on 13 July 1841 in Camillus, Onondaga county, New York. At the time of his enlistment in Co. G, 3rd New York Light Artillery on 3 September 1864, he was a resident of Memphis, Onondaga county, New York. His parents were John Fox (1795-Aft1855) and Elizabeth Fitzgerald (1810-Aft1865), both natives of Ireland who ...came to New York State by way of Canada. James’ military records indicates he was a participant in the Battle at Kinston. He was discharged from the Battery on 20 July 1865. James was married in 1891 to Louisa Emeline Littig (1860-1910).Mentioned throughout these letters are James’ siblings, Gerald D. Fox (1830-1916), Richard (“Dick”) Fox (1840-Aft1910), Ellen Fox (1844-1932) and Thomas Fox (1847-Aft1965). These letters were all sent to Helen M. (Oderkirk) Fox (1837-1921), the wife of Gerald Fox. Helen was the daughter of Lyman B. Oderkirk (1813-1895) and Philinda Rema (1816-1902). Though most of the letters were written by James Fox of Battery G, 3rd N. Y. Artillery, a handful of them were written by Helen’s brother, Perry H. Oderkirk (1836-1906) of Battery D, 3rd New York Artillery.Ellen Fox married Allen Wright (1838-1904) on the 4th of July 1863. Oderkirk to his sister Hellen Fox]Raleigh, North Carolina
May 14th 1865Dear Sister, Again I seat myself to answer your much welcome letter which was received last Sunday and one from Eleno and I wrote to her last so I thought it was your turn to get a letter from me.My health is good and I hope you all enjoy the same. It is darn lonesome business soldiering since the war has closed. We don’t have drills at all, We’ve not anything to do. I am too lazy to go to the cook house for my meals. The boys are all well in Battery G. We don’t know no more when we shall be discharged than we did 4 weeks ago but we are in hopes to get our discharge in a few days. We are all anxious to be in Memphis [New York] the 4th of July next and I hope sooner. I and soldiering have had a falling out.Well, Hellen, I have been to sleep and just woke up. Theodore Bates and Hank Sherwood’s cabin store there [  ] if the broke up, sell that note of Hanks if you can for it will be a hard matter to collect it if he hain’t in business. Has he got the old cow yet? What is the wages there this summer and what does Gerald get at Nate’s. Does Fred Nobels keep meat market and what are they all a doing? Have D___ Dick and Galva make it? Well the most of all, how is my little girls a getting along? You may think that I ask a great many things that is of no account but you must answer them all. Write to me and tell me if Gerald gets any of the bounty or not. If he did not  promise his substitute the bounty, he can get it.Give my love to all of our folks and tell Elino that the next will be her that will get a letter. Well I can’t think of anything more. No more at present but remain ever your friend and brother.— Perry H.
