I have been collecting/dealing in Antiques and Collectibles for well over 45 years. Most of the treasures that I acquire are direct from estates or houses. Over the time that I have been been doing this I have ended up setting aside items that were either of specific interest to me or that I felt were especially "unique and eclectic". This has ended up with my having a rather extensive "personal" collection. I am now at a point in my life that I have to limit this addiction and in fact actually downsize my "collection(s)!" I suggest that you consider adding me to your list of sellers that you follow as I will be offering many "decommissioned" treasures as well as the extensive new acquisitions that I continue to pursue in my semi-retirement!
Those of you that follow my listings have noted that many of my descriptions include historical background. I do this in the hope that it will inspire many, with emphasis being focused on the younger generations towards reviving interest in our heritage and the artistic creativity of our forefathers. All of us have a rich history in common. This is something that we should be curious and proud of! I also invite any and all questions that interested parties may have. It gives me the opportunity to pass on many years of experience. That is what it is all about!
The German firm of Siemens & Halske was founded 1847 by Werner von Siemens and Johann Georg Halske to repair telegraphs and manufacture Siemens' pointer telegraph. Telegraphy was based on the Morse code requiring highly trained operators. Siemens' designed a mechanical system that moved a pointer to indicate the letter being received, allowing less trained operators who simply read off the letters and wrote them done. The pointer telegraph was a success and the business prospered. Siemens was the inventor and Halske was a competent mechanic. However, both men were of poor origins so the capital for the business came from Siemens cousin Johann Siemens. Although Werner was a proficient inventor, his best decision was to let his more business minded brothers run the business while he continued to invent. With the advent of Mr. Bell's invention of the telephone in 1877 and its subsequent introduction to Europe, Siemens & Halske saw it as a logical direction in development for their telegraph manufacturing. The company responded, producing it first telephones in November of 1877! When Bell found out about this he wrote to Siemens & Halske, to which they responded "As you have failed to patent your lovely invention in Germany, we will continue production. But please inform us in which countries you have a patent so we can refuse orders from those countries."
This is a wonderful circa 1905 intercom telephone with a 25 position dial. It is approximately 5½" x 5¾" at the base x 10" tall.
