The shoulder belt and elaborate epaulette with embroidered grenade identify him as a Royal Engineer while his headdress confirms his volunteer status. Royal Artillery volunteer corps were widely distributed across the country whereas Engineer units were less common. The following 'Wikiwand' website extract prov...ides the historical context:A volunteer unit of the Royal Engineers was also raised (I.e. in addition to Artillery volunteers): 1st Durham EVC, formed at Jarrow on 28 March 1868. In 1869 the smaller Newcastle upon Tyne EVC was attached to the unit, and from 1874 they were united in the 1st Admin Battalion, Durham Engineer Volunteers (later 1st Newcastle & Durham.Both image and mount are in very good condition (see scan). Minor foxing does not detract from the uniform detail which is very clear.
