October of 1967 the squadronmoved to Hue Phu Bai as the Marines' focus shifted to Northern I Corps and the DMZ. A month later another move took the cherry six emblem further north to Quang Tri Air Base and another call signSeaworthy. In October 1968 the first contingent of six (6) OV-10A Broncosjoined the Hueys and O1 Bird Dogs of VMO-6. They immediately proved their worth, leaping into the fray within 18 hours of joining the squadron at Quang Tri. Andthe list of places committed to memory by hard and often times painful experiences grew; Khe Sanh, Con Thien, Gio Linh, The Rockpile, Vandergrift, theBen Hai, Lz Argon. The name Seaworthy became synonymous with such operations asDewey Canyon, Maine Craig, Apache Snow, Scotland II, Montana Mauler, and IdahoCanyon. On September 1st 1965 the squadron off loaded and began operating fromKy Ha Airstrip at Chu Lai. The squadron's history then became a matter of namesand operations Quang Ngai, Double Eagle, Blue Marlin, Duc Pho. The list becomesendless, each with its own special meaning to each Kondiker, the squadrons callsign. These gunships were assigned tothe Marine Observation Squadron VMO-6. At the time of the rescue efforts the unit was operating from Quang TriAir Base and using the call sign Seaworthy.The UH-1E Huey helicopter gunships werearmed versions of the Huey also used to carry troops into and out of combat.They were equipped with two (one on each side) forward pointing M-60 machineguns along with a pod of seven 2.5 inch rockets, that were aimed and fired bythe pilot. In the open doorways of each side were M-60 machine guns used bydoor gunners.
On 16 February 1968, two Hueygunships were launched to assist in the emergency extraction of reconnaissanceteam "Box Score." The transport helicopter landed in the zone andpicked up the team, but as it was lifting out, two team members jumped our tohelp another member who had failed to get on board. The transport helicoptercontinued out of the zone because of extensive battle damage. One of the VMO-6escorting H-1gunships, "Seaworthy" 4-2 1, went into the LZ to pick upthe remaining three members. Lifting out of the zone it received heavy enemyfire and crashed.*** Killed immediately were the pilot, First LieutenantBobbyF.Galbreath, the co-pilot, First Lieutenant Paul A.Jensen, and the gunner, Staff Sergeant Jimmy E.Tolliver.The crew chief, Corporal Harry W.Schneider, died of injuries enroute to Da Nang the following day. One of the team membersdied in the crash, one died later of injuries, but the last received medicaltreatment in time to be the sole survivor.
