”The Surface Miner, ” Bucyrus Erie Company, Volume 4, Number 3, 1975. This Bucyrus Erie publication, i...ssued roughly quarterly, was a promotional magazine and sales brochure for the company’s large surface mining equipment, including walking draglines, electric power shovels, and large rotary blasthole drills. At that time, Bucyrus Erie was the largest manufacturer of these machines in the world. When this issue was published in mid-1975, the world-wide mining industry was in the midst of a long boom period, especially for commodities like coal, copper, and iron ore, which were B-E’s primary customers. Their business was so hot at that time that the company purchased a huge factory complex in Idaho to add manufacturing capacity. This issue of “The Surface Miner” includes information and photos of the new plant, which had just completed its first major piece of mining equipment, a 45R blast hole drill.
This issue is 22 pages long, including covers, and contains 9 articles and numerous color and black-and-white photos. The magazine is 8-1/2”x11” in size, and is printed on heavy, glossy paper. It is in excellent condition. No missing pages, no tears, stains, folds, writing, staples, etc. You can see the spot on page 21 where a paper clip had been clipped to the page (see photos).
