Great wall display! This is a big heavy marker that was in my front yard and I think the pole had been hit by a car in years past and the marker broke off of the pole as you can see. It had a couple of attempted repairs by the park maintenance guys and it kept falling off. It was replaced and they let me drag this off! It measures 27" wide and 20" top to base. It is 3/4" thick and weighs 55 pounds! A little about the 59th Tennessee: The nucleus of the 59th Regime...nt was Eakin’s Tennessee Infantry Battalion, composed of five companies and organized into a battalion on February 17, 1862. The battalion was gradually increased to a regiment by the addition of other companies, and was known as the 1st East Tennessee Battalion. It was organized as a regiment in May, 1862, and was officially designated the 59th Tennessee Infantry June 30, 1862 In December, the brigade was restored to Stevenson’s Division, and moved to Vicksburg, where it remained until the surrender of that city on July 4, 1863. The brigade left Vicksburg May 1, as the rear guard of Lieutenant General Pemberton’s Army marching toward Port Gibson. It halted at Baker’s Creek, and was engaged with the enemy as guard for the baggage and trains; returned to Vicksburg May 6, “The men greatly exhausted”; and remained in the entrenchments from that time on. Colonel Reynolds reported: “During these 47 days, under the terrific fire of the enemy’s artillery and infantry, the officers and men of the brigade bore themselves with constancy and courage. Often half fed, and ill clothed, exposed to the burning sun and soaking rain, they performed their duty cheerfully and without a murmur.
