Item History & Price
Numerous battles were fought by Union soldiers led by General Grant and Confederate soldiers led by General John Pemberton during attempts by General Grant to capture the Mississippi River town of Vicksburg in late April and early May of 1863. By the end of May, after Grant's army had suffered seriou...s casualties, he decided to settle his army in for a siege, waiting it out for seven weeks. Low on supplies, food and with no reinforcements, Pemberton surrendered on July 4 and as a result General Grant took control of the entire Mississippi River splitting the Confederacy in half.
