USS YORKTOWN CVS - 10 FAR EAST CRUISE TASK FORCE 77 PATCH 1961 VG
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:14416825 | Modified Item: No |
Country/Region of Manufacture: United States |
The patch is something I acquired years ago and have decided to sell off a large portion of my navy patch collection over the next few months. This patch measures 5 3/8" tall by 7 9/16" wide. The patch is in very nice condition and has no stitch marks on the edges so it appears to be in virtually mint condition. The only minor marks appear to have been made by thumb ...tacks used to pin this patch to a board or wall.
This patch is sixty years old and in mint condition for its age. The patch has six flags embroidered on it including; the US, Japanese, Taiwan, Burma, South Vietnam and the United Nations flags. The top of the patch reads, "FAR EAST CRUISE 1961" set in black colored thread. The bottom of the patch reads, "USS YORKTOWN CVS-10".
During this period the USS YORKTOWN was designated a CVS carrier versus a CVA. After World War Two all carriers were modified or upgraded to handle larger and heavier jet aircraft that became the backbone of the U.S. Navy air arm. Several of the carriers were classified as either CVS (anti-submarine aircraft carrier) or CVA (attack aircraft carrier) carriers. Being the second ship of the Essex class of carriers predominantly built during World War Two, the USS Yorktown served from 1943 through 1970, earning seventeen battle stars for her deployments during WWII and the Vietnam War. She was reclassified from CVA-10 to CVS-10 in 1957 and retained that designation until her retirement in 1970.
This patch will not last long so bid with confidence.
