Vintage 1942 Rolex Oyster Commander Wristwatch - Canadian Military Model Cal. 59
Item History & Price
This is a very unusual Rolex Oyster Commander Wristwatch that was generously donated to our charity. This is an early model made for the Canadian market. This example has a serial number of 220452 dating it to 1942. These watches were often used by members of the Canadian Military. This model was fitted with the renowned Rolex Calibre 59 movement. It has a gold plated case ...that measures 28mm excluding crown. The distance between the lugs is 11mm. We do not have any way of unscrewing the back so cannot show the mechanism or the inside of the caseback. The dial appears all original and it looks to have the original crown. These Canadian Models were not marked Rolex on the Dial but all have RWC markings inside the caseback and the movements are signed on the underside - underneath the dial.
When we received the watch it was initially running fine and keeping good time however it has stopped doing so and now seems to run intermittently sometimes stopping. Although other times it runs for long periods of time fine and will run completely down. So this suggests the movement may need cleaning. The watch seems to wind correctly when the winder is turned. When the winder is pulled out it does not turn the hands in the correct clockwise direction it just seems to unscrew. However it will turn the hands backwards (anti-clockwise) although we have refrained from doing this as it can apparently harm the mechanism. Watch will definitely require a service and / or mending so is being sold for spares / repair only. The case looks in very good condition for age - the plating is worn on the outer edges of the lugs but otherwise looks very good for age.
So there we have it - a quite rare Early Rolex Oyster Model in need of a service and hopefully quite minor repair..
Thankyou for looking at our Auction.
