...When most people think of wartime food rationing, they think of World War II. However, civilians were encouraged to do their part for the war effort during World War I as well. This colorful poster by artist Charles E. Chambers was issued by the United States Food Administration to encourage voluntary food conservation. "Food Will Win the War" was the name of the campaign initiated by the newly appointed head of the agency, Herbert Hoover. Poster calls on immigrants to do their part in the war effort. It depicts recent immigrants standing near a sailing ship with the Statue of Liberty and a rainbow stretched across the New York City skyline in the background.
Poster size appx 20" x 29 7/8".
Condition: Poster shows heavy edge and corner wear, light soiling mostly around edges, some edge/corner creases/tears/chips, A FEW TEARS GO INTO ILLUSTRATION, old tape repairs along left side, light musty/smoky smell due to poor storage. Overall: Poster is Fair to near G.
