More and more individuals re-discover the quality of a time long past, the timewhen vinyl records delivered an experience unmatched by anything that cameafter in the field of audio reproduction!
To enjoy their collection of LP records, aficionados seek-out qualityturntables which allow them to play their records over and over againwith...out harming their priced vinyl records. Among the top turntables isundoubtedly the THORENS TD-124. The TD-124 has the reputation to beindestructible and at the same time unmatched when it comes to precisionand specifications. Built in Switzerland more then half a century ago, the TD-124 offers everything you will ever need; four speeds, built-in stroboscope, convenient fast stop which will keep the heavy platter turning while you flip the vinyl record, built in bubble level, built-in adapter for 45 RPM discs. It has a spring and when you push it lightly and turn it to the right the cylinder in the center moves up, when you push it lightly down again and turn it to the left, it will lock and stay put. The TD-124 has a side-mount wooden board which allows the installation of any high-end tonearm, and so much more! These Swiss precision turntables are built to such a precision that the bearings of the motorand other bearings are not turning freely when not used for an extendedperiod of time. The dried oil is all that is needed in the precisemanufactured bearings to restrict motion! Most individuals "rebuild" these motors bydrilling out the rivets holding the end-caps of the electric motor. The bronze bearings and felt ring holding the oil reserve are mounted to the motor housingwith these end-caps. I do not believe in this course of "rebuilding!"
What I do instead, and did with this turntable, is, I remove the motor(all wires need to be un-soldered), takethe motor apart (unscrewing four screws) and soak the two side pieces with the end-capscontaining the bearing and felt-ring in carbon tetrachloride. This dissolves all thegrease and oil residue. Warning, if anybody who reads this is attempting todo the same, please do not inhale the fumes; use a closed glass containerand do it outside! I leave the parts in the container for one week andshake it each time I walk by the glass container so there is movement ofthe tetrachloride. The colorless liquid will turn brown after a few days, henceall the old oil residue is dissolve in the liquid. After a week, the twoside-parts of the motor housing need to be dried, (do it outside!).
Once they are dry, twenty oil drops on each bearing is applied. All the twenty drops are being absorbed by thefelt ring inside the end-caps and the bearings are like new again. A motor cleaned andoiled this way will do miracles to your TD-124! When switched ON, theturntable is up to speed in less then one revolution! The mirror of thebuilt-in stroboscope is clear and has no signs of being cleaned in aninappropriate way. I replaced the wooden suspension grommets and the drive-belt is also new. The only flaw is a little dent ontop of the head-shell. The plinth is solid mahogany wood and has a hole drilled in the back for the power cord and the other wires and cables. This turntable is well above average condition and is about as nice as you can find one!
The turntable will be packed with the heavy platter removed from the turntable. The right amount of Thorens-oil will be supplied in a small syringe. Just empty the syringe intothe main bearing once the turntable is setup at its intended place.

Even underneath the heavy platter there are no finger prints as you usually would find. There is no corrosion on any parts. A trulynice and clean machine. The original paint has still the glossy shine as it had on day one when it left the factory about 50 years ago.
