Antique 1920 ' S / 1930 ' S Anglo - Indian Carved Sandalwood Box
Item History & Price
~Welcome to my auction for this finely carved sandalwood box~
This is a well executed hand carved box dating from the 'days of the Raj' in India during the the 1920's or 1930's.
Almost every panel on the box, including the underside and inside of the lid is decorated in some way and has been a labour of love for someone to complete.
This type of highly carved box are synonymous with the work produced by Indian crafts...men in the early part of the 20th century - most pieces seen today are designed as cigarette or cigar boxes - this example is no exception, and there were actually still a few tiny flakes of tobacco inside it when I acquired it, plus a very faint smell, but this is not overpowering in any way.
The lid of the box is profusely carved with foliage motifs and has a larger flower head at each of the 4 corners - around the edge of the lid is a raised 'tooth' border.Around the 4 edges are more carved panels of foliage motifs.
The lid is held in place by a simple brass hinge - when opened you can see that the inside of the lid is also carved to the to the corners. The inside of the main body of the box is plain but has a tooth border - please note that these tooth panels can be removed and don't appear to have ever been permanently fixed in place.
The underside of the box is very simply decorated with an X pattern border.
What's particularly interesting is that there are no joints to either half which would suggest that the inner recesses of both halves have also been carved out.
There are no obvious makers on the item so it's impossible to say who made the piece - the work is typical of the items being produced for the British market during the early years of the 20th century and up until ww2.
The box measures 12.5cm x 12.5cm x 5cm - the total unpacked weight is 227.6g.
The condition of the item is generally very good - the box is solid and sturdy and it closes well to give a good seal - a couple of the petals on the flowers to the lid have been chipped but the dark patination and colour of the wood makes these almost seamlessly blend in.The tooth removable panel to the inside has small chip to one corner, but this is not offensive to the eye, and of course, can't be seen when the lid is closed. The box is altogether a nice display piece!
Considering the amount of hours that would of gone into making this item, its a great value item - please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the piece. If you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige.
