This fabulous "Hammond No. 12" typewriter is the straight keyboard version and dates to around 1905.The "Hammond" typewriter was invented in the early 1880's by James B Hammond, the "Hammond" typewriter used a type-shuttle and a spring loaded hammer arrangement in order for each letter typed to have a uniform appearance, this design was so successful that it was still being used in 1980's.All of the original keys are present and the letters, numbers etc are still visible, if a little ...faded in places.All of the keys appear depress well, however, the type head doesn't rotate for all of the keys. The carriage moves along as it should when typing and when the space bar is depressedBoth of the original ribbon holders are present, one has a damaged bottom.The celluloid plaque and space bars are free from any splits or cracks and the lettering is still legible, however, the plaque does have "bow" to it.The chrome and exposed metal work have retained much of their original finish, however, there are small areas of loss in places.The black painted bar across the top has some missing paint. The serial number is 99088.The wooden base has the "Hammonds" makers plaque and another for the "English Branch of the Hammond Typewriter Co., 50, Queen Victoria St, London."The machine has its original bentwood case, this still has its' paper label inside the lid and gold writing to the front.There are no splits or cracks to the cover.
