A very large brooch that was designed originally to hold a shawl or cloak in place, this lovely brooch contains a polished Moss Agate stone set in a Sterling Silver mount.It dates from about 1870.
It fastens with a very strong pin that was intended to pierce through thick woollen plaid and has the usual antique C clasp that still fastens well.
Moss Agate stones like these were thought to contain landscapes that reflected the lochs, forests and mountains of Scotland and this love...ly example makes it easy to see why.No hallmarks but that is very common in these old Scottish Sterling Silver brooches.Measures approximately 6 x 4.5 x 1cms and weighs 26.8grams.
These brooches have now become very collectable but they are also still nice to wear.
Will be very carefully packed and shipped via Royal Mail 24, tracked, signed for and insured.
