Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is a beautifully-designed, deeply hand carved cuckoo clock that is made to look like a very detailed grape vine complete with five large grape leaves on the front. The clock has a remarkable blended walnut and color finish. A beautifully carved wooden bird is per...ched to the left of the dial and another is found to the right of the dial. Each is looking outward as if standing guard and an equally impressive, large, colorful, hand carved bird is perched atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight; very nice! The clock is carved from home grown, cured and aged Linden wood which has been the choice wood of fine carvers in the Black Forest since around 1870. The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it should. It looks almost new but the clock was actually created about 45 years ago in the Black Forest of "Triberg Germany" by "Hubert Herr, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. It is just gorgeous on display and the ideal size too measuring about 11" or so high (from the tip of the bird on top to the bottom of the grape branches on the bottom and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" at its deepest point, and about 8" across the top. The dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read, embossed Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare set of goldtone, very fancy matching hands to point out the time. There is a hinged wooden door on the right side of the case that is secured with a metal hasp. It opens to allow access to the clock movement in case any adjustments or service is needed from this angle. The clock has a wooden back secured with a metal latch and easily removes to allow access to the weightdriven mechanical movement inside the case bearing the Hubert Herr name. A weight driven movementsimply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind theclock and cuckoo activity. The bellow whistle tubes are in goodshape and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in thedoorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding chime and when he's finished, the bird retreats back inside the clock, closingthe door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctlycuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock; fascinating! Keep in mind this is an old clock and we do not know the service history even though the movement does show signs of having been maintained over the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its newhome. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preservethis classic clock and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comescomplete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a matching, hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metalweights. I've looked the clock over fairly well and find very little wear and a hard-to-see old repair on the lower frame but nothing detracting. I doubt is anything could; gorgeous on display! This clock is certain to capture the imagination of anyone visiting in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, hand carved, rare German timepiece with a real legacy behind it.
