This auction is for a stunning example of a crinoid fossil of the species Pentacrinites fossilis from the world famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK.The fossil measures 58 mm (2.26 inches) across. The fossil consists of a single partial head with great detail in the arms and pinnules. It is preserved in limestone with a thin layer of pyrite on the surface. These crinoids are very sought after and not easy to find these days. Crinoids with heads preserved are hard to... find!Crinoids (also known as "sea lilies") are not plants, but animals that are closely related to star fish and sea urchins. They are still found alive today in oceans around the world.Around 195 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
