Preliminary Note: Although it is now employed quite commonly on eBay, I am always reluctant to use the word "rare" to describe an item I am offering for sale. In fact, I have done so only once a year in the past five years; this is my "rare" item for 2019. I feel the term is justified in this case because, to the best of my knowledge, it has never before been sold. Neither the game nor the company that produced it is listed in the Game Catalog of the AGPI or in any of... the standard reference works on games or playing cards. The only reference to the game I could find was its registry on November 9, 1903 in the Catalogueof Title Entries of Books and Other Articles Entered in the Office of theRegister of Copyrights, Library of Congress, at Washington, Volume 37. The only reference to the Birdino Company I could locate was in the 1904 edition of Bradstreet's Book of Commercial Ratings, Michigan. If you have additional information, kindly let me know.
For your consideration is the rare antique card game: JAPS SET: JAPS, FLIGHT, MIKADO, TRIG, HOODOO, DOBBIN, NIBS. The game was published in 1903 by the BIRDINO GAME CO. of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The game is complete with 66 cards and 16-page rules booklet in the original box. The cards are as follows: 1 MIKADO card15 black "C" cards (Crow)15 red "E" cards (Eagle) - note the "E Pluribus Unum" on #1515 red "O" cards (Owl)15 black "S" cards (Swan) 5 black "X" cards (Owl) with green instead of brown backs, used only in the game of "Flight."The cards, with a bird design on the reverse, measure 2-1/4 inches by 3-1/2 inches.
CONDITION: The game is COMPLETE with all 66 CARDS and DIRECTIONS BOOKLET in the ORIGINAL BOX. The cards are gently used: rubbed and soiled but free of creases, tears, etc. The directions booklet is age-toned lightly soiled and is worn at the fold. The gilt on the box top is heavily rubbed so that it is difficult to make out the printing. Both the box top and bottom are fully intact. PLEASE MOUSE OVER THE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR CONDITION DETAILS.
