PEWTER SPOON DEPICTING A TULIP Description:Date: C. 16th-17th centuryInformation: A nice pewter spoon with hand punched decoration to bowl depicting a tulip. Possibly of Dutch origin due to the tulip design.In the past centuries people were rarely given cutlery by their host, and therefore took their own cutlery with them when they were invited and whilst they were travelling. The cutlery was usually carried in a sheath or case suspended from a... belt or concealed in a pocket. There were however, more original methods in which the spoon was carried in their hat-band. It was not until about the 1700’s that uniform were in common use. Tableware was highly personal: it demonstrated that its owner was cultured, had good taste and commanded wealth and power.Provenance: Ex Polish CollectionCondition: Intact with fine detail and an even dark tone.Size: 173mm length
