It is a scarce example that comes complete with its heavy, substantial Snake-Chain. The Cross is marked with “Price’s Patent November 2, 1858”. This is a unique Makers sample, not intended for sales. Seldom do we see such crosses that are still complete with their original chain. Not something seen every day. Superior high quality. And far more rugged and individualistic then later examples. Centerpiece measures approximately 2 ¾ x 2 ¾ inches. The chain is approximately 10 inches long. This type of Maltese Cross Jewel was designed to accommodate a sword. The "KEYHOLE" device at center is for the insertion of a Sword. The old Templar Swords have a device (resembling a key) on the back of their Scabbards that fits nicely into the Cross' center "keyhole". EXTREMELY RARE ANTIQUE DATED 1858 PRE-CIVIL WAR HISTORICAL MASONIC KNIGHTS TEMPLAR-MALTA CROSS BELT-JEWEL WITH RUGGED SNAKE-CHAIN! A UNIQUE MAKER’S SAMPLE! A POWERFUL WORK DESIGNED & MADE BY PREMIER SWORD & REGALIA DESIGNER/MAKER, FREEMASON & TEMPLAR OFFICER, VIRGIL PRICE! The item is silver in color. And it looks to be silver. But we are not jewelers and do not test unmarked jewelry and therefore do not know if it is actual silver or a very nice silver color metal of some type. And if it were marked for silver, our price would be much higher. The Cross is marked with “Price’s Patent 1858”. Which implies it was made by one of the most important historic Sword and Regalia makers, Freemason and Knight Templar Virgil Price. It should be noted that Virgil Price was the man who designed a great number of the old patterns used on swords for Freemasonry, the Odd Fellows and other Secret Society and other organizations. This individual is as historically significant as all the great companies, many of whom licensed his patents. And these include all the greats: “The Ames Sword Company”, “M. C. Lilley & Co”, “The Pettibone Bros” and “William Horstmann of Philadelphia”. A most beautiful piece. And a great memento of middle-19th century American Freemasonry and Templarism. A VERY RARE ITEM!
