AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY THOMAS JEFFERSON THREE TIMES TO CASPAR WISTAR, ONE OF JEFFERSON’S ADVISERS ON THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION
Autograph letter signed by, “Th: Jefferson, ” three times to Caspa...r Wistar (1761-1818), an American physician who was close friends with Thomas Jefferson and collaborated with on several scientific projects, including a list of general questions they created for Meriwether Lewis that were pertinent to the goals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
JEFFERSON REQUESTS THAT WISTAR FORWARD A LETTER TO THE SON OF JEFFERSON’S PERSONAL PHYSICIAN
Four months before the start of the War of 1812, Jefferson requests that Wistar forward an important letter to Harmer Gilmer (1787-1812), an American physician who was the son of Jefferson’s personal physician George Gilmer (1743-1795): “Th: Jefferson salutes his friend Doctr. Wistar with esteem and respect, and takes the liberty of getting under cover to him a letter to Mr. Harmer Gilmer, which it is important to Th: J. to have delivered before Mr. Gilmer leaves Philadelphia, being uninformed of his lodging or particular address in Philadelphia and presuming he is personally known to Dr. Wistar, Th: J. has presumed so far on his friendship as to request his having it safely delivered. Monticello, Feb. 16, 12.” According to Volume IV of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson was requesting the safe transport of medical plants from Philadelphia to Monticello for treatment in the letter Jefferson forwarded to Gilmer.

The letter is one page; measures 9.5” by 6.5”; in fine condition with separations to the folds, minor soiling, and small area of paperloss on the left border from the opening of the wax seal; and beautifully matted and framed with an 1862 steel engraving of Jefferson under UV glass.
