The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a row of sailing ships at sea with two men standing on deck. There is a trio of birds in flight over the ship to the left and two standing birds above the largest ship. The whole piece is then surrounded by an acorn border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a small split beneath the three birds in flight. There are also two larger splits running horizontally and vertically through the centre, presumably as a result of the sampler being folded this way for many years. This has caused a small amount of stitch loss. Fortunately the sampler has been rescued at some point of time and placed on a wonder web backing to keep it stable. The backing is white which highlights the damage, but if the sampler was placed onto a similar coloured backing cloth it would be less noticeable. Due to the web backing, I'm not able to see the reverse of the sampler, but the colours appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also some slight bleeding to areas of the stitch work.Measures 10 1/2" x 16 1/2"
