Original Description:
Late 19th century sampler by Mary Margaret Moor aged 10 - 1882. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a cushion motif, crown and cup at the end of the last row then underlined with a floral border. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central ship in full sail with a tree on either side of its hull w...ith a flower above each and a rosebush and tree plus bird on either side of its rigging, with a star by the left side rosebush and a windmill by the one on the right. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central strip of grass with a floral motif in the middle which has a goose standing on each side. The grass is then flanked by a rose basket and floral motif. Mary Margaret's details and the date of 1882 are stitched across the bottom edge of the gauze with a goblet to the left of her name and a dog to the right. There is a flower basket, crown and dog to the left of her age and the date and a dog, crown and two diamond motifs to the right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with general grubbiness and patches of brown staining. The colours of the wool are good with some shades having mellowed more than others over the years. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary Margaret first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 14 1/2" x 16"
