Fear not little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasureTo give you the kingdom
The lower section of the gauze is stitched at the centre with a very sweet single storey house which has a floral bush, tree, flower and floral urn on either side. Janet's name, her place of residence - Greenock - and the date of 1853 are stitched in red across the bottom edge then the whole piece is surrounded by a narrow green and red zigzag border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places, and the colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Janet first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.Measures 11 3/4" x 16 1/2"
I AM ALSO SELLING A SAMPLER ACQUIRED AT THE SAME TIME AS JANET'S. IT WAS COMPLETED IN 1859 BY MARGARET LANG SLATER, ALSO FROM GREENOCK. THERE IS ALSO A ROW OF CROWNS WITH THE SAME FAMILY INITIALS BENEATH ON MARGARET'S SAMPLER SO I THINK IT IS ALMOST CERTAIN THAT THE GIRLS WERE SISTERS.
