Mid 19th century sampler by Isabella Smith aged 9 - 1845. Worked in silk on gauze, this sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Isabella was just nine years old when she completed it. The upper section of the gauze is stitched at the centre with an impressive three storey mansion house which has fruit tree and bird on each side, an urn and floral swag above them. There is a campanile on the roof with Isabella's details and the da...te of 1845 stitched to its left and right and a bird perched on each outermost chimney. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central rose basket which has a flower basket, tulip and garden urn to each side. There is a flower basket beneath the central rose basket which has a fruit basket and floral urn on a  stand to its left and right, a rosebud and fruit bush above them. The whole piece is then surrounded by an arcaded floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the silks are good  with some bleeding to areas of the darker stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Isabella first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. Measures 18" x 17"
THERE IS ALSO SOME MINOR SHEDDING OF FIBRES ON THE BACK OF THE SAMPLER SO I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT HANDLING BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM UNTIL THE SAMPLER IS BEHIND GLASS AND FRAMED.
