Early/mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Elizabeth Hainsworth aged 13 - 1837. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with bird, crown, dog, and tree motifs at the end of certain rows. The lower section of the linen is stitched with Elizabeth's details and the date of Anno Domini 1837 (a bit tricky to read.) There is a central flo...wer basket beneath with a peacock, bird on a blossom branch, crown and small red dog to its left and right. The topmost bloom of the basket has two birds above flanked by a fruit basket, tulip, flower and bird. The whole piece is then surrounded by a strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with general faint staining from where certain shades of the wool have bled. The colours of the wool are good with the minor bleeding just mentioned and the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it.Measures 16 1/4" across x 16 1/2" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
