Early/mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Jane Petchey aged 11 - 1837. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket with a dog, fruit basket and carnation urn to the right and left with birds and flowers above then underlined with a deep carnation border.The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which has a floral motif, tree urn and flower dow...n either side

The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central tree flanked by swathes of grass, a floral motif and carnation. There is a bird perched on top of the central tree with a floral motif to his left and right followed by a tree which has a bird on each side. Jane's details and the date of Oct. 1837 are stitched beneath then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly brown and with a darker line running across the top section of the linen. The sampler has also been restored at some point of time, to a high standard in my opinion. There are several areas of neat repair work, the largest being by the central flower basket in the upper section of the linen and another by the top of the central tree in the bottom section. The other areas are much smaller and with the sampler having been placed on a similar coloured backing clothe the repair work is less noticeable. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There are also some small areas of stitch loss due to the damage on the linen. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with some veneer loss to the upper left and lower right corners of the frame and the odd scratch and scuff mark commensurate with their age.Measures 11 1/2" x 15 1/2" (sight size) and 15 1/4" x 19 1/4" including the frame.
