Mid 19th century French wool work - c.1860. I am saying this piece is French as the bottom section of the gauze has the outline of what was originally words worked in beads. There is just a single L remaining of the bead work but one can just make out the words - Fait Par (made by) - but unfortunately I am not able to decipher the name of the stitcher. The date is also unreadable, but the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1860 or slightly earlier. Worked in... wool on gauze, this wool work is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout . The field of the gauze is stitched with a large bird standing on a blossom branch bearing flowers both in bud and full bloom. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a small area of damage on the lower right edge. The colours of the with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the wool work and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks and some fraying around the edges of the gauze from where the wool work has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 15 1/2" across x 15" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
