This is a rare 19th Century European Whitework Hanky. Fine quality natural fibers were used in the best vintage handkerchiefs. Cotton fabrics that were so fine they were translucent were typical of eighteenth and early nineteenth century handkerchiefs. This handkerchief is a fine example of this. It measures 18" and has a 1/2 " handmade bobbin lace edge. It is incredible how fine the hand embroidery is on this piece. In-between the fine embroidery ar...e the tiniest needle stitches and French knots. It boggles my mind how this can even be accomplished! I cannot make out the monogram letters (I think the last one is an R), but it doesn't really matter- the monogram is so beautiful. There are a few blemishes which is to be expected in such an old piece. There is one bigger hole in the center and a few tiny holes as well and a few breaks in the needle stitches in the embroidery, (see pictures) but it does not affect the overall look of the piece. It has not been washed in decades, but would lighten up in color if it was.Please contact me with any questions.
