Thumbnail (see photo for more details). Here we have an attractive and very rare specimen of a tabular raspberry red beryl crystal perched on a topaz crystal from the Thomas Range in Utah. When it comes to red beryl, Utah is the "place". ...Red beryl was first discovered and described by Maynard Bixby from the Thomas Range (type locality) in the late 1890s. By the way, Maynard Bixby also first discovered and described bixbyite from this same locale. The beryl crystal has a raspberry red color, which is different from the "normal" dark red color that usually characterizes the red beryl from the Thomas Range and the beryl crystals are well-formed and sharp. The beryl crystal is perched on a topaz crystal. The topaz crystal is well formed; however, the crystal has numerous quartz inclusions giving the crystal a grayish opaque appearance.
