Liberty Bond Poster Linen First World War I WW1 WWI 1918 Pennell

Original 1918 lithograph supporting the Fourth Liberty Loan, a national war bond initiative during the First World War. The poster solicits contributions by evoking an Armageddon scenario: the fiery destruction of New York Harbor by German bombers. Note the burning ships, buildings, and decapitated Statue of Liberty, her severed head lying at her feet. The image was specifically designed to combat American isolationism and the sentiment that the US should not have i...ntervened in the "European War." The poster responds by asserting (rather unrealistically, given the state of airplane technology at the time and the distance to Germany) that if the US does not fight the Germans now in Europe, it may have to fight them later on home soil. Artist is Joseph Pennell, the renowned illustrator and painter from Philadelphia. Dimensions are 40 x 30 inches. Newly linen backed (10 oz cotton canvas + 100 lb cotton paper) and acid-neutralized.  Excellent condition; strong colors; no missing paper or fold lines.
