Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:16189732 | Featured Refinements: Cast Iron Mechanical Bank |
The Uncle Sam Mechanical Bank is probably one of the hardest toys to date when you find one. The original was made by Shepherd Hardwarearound 1885. Then there were reproductions starting several decadeslater. I bought this is an antique store around 1994 and the owner was nice enoughto tell me that it looked old but was not one of the originals. He said it was part of that second generati...on version of the original, c. 1940. There are several interestingfeatures about this version. You will notice that there are two paint drips on the piecewhich suggests to me hand painted. Usually you don't see stray paint drops. Thisis very heavy cast iron too. The paint is faded.
When the 3rd generation of production started in the 1970s these banks were notheavy cast iron. These banks would also be brightly colored today (unlike the oneyou are looking at).
The 4th generation production starts in the 1980s and 1990s when they are importedfrom Taiwan and China. The quality goes down, but the brightness of the paint goesup.
Condition is Used. Probably made, 1930s, 1940s, or 1950s.
