This is a wonderful, original document, dated 1755, Scarborough, Maine, where Samson Plummer, has sold to John Libby, a tract of land in Scarborough...embossedtwo pence revenue at upper left, signed at bottom by Samson Plummer, Joseph King, Abner Libby and Edward Miliken. Document is 8x12, stains, Embossed "II Pence" Revenue Stamp is located at upper left, is very clear in detail.Document has acid free archival tape repairs on back along center horizontal fold.Edward Milliken, (1706-17...65) was baptized at the Brattle Street church, Boston, Mass., July 6, 1706, and settled in Scarborough (District of Maine), on the Dunstan lands, in 1729."Was admitted to the First Church in Scarborough, Oct. 31, 1736.He was widely known by the title 'Justice Milliken, ' having been appointed a judge of the Inferior Court in 1760, and was continued in that office until 1771.His reputation was that of sound judgement and sterling integrity; a prudent counsellor and useful, public-spirited townsman.He was a grantee of Trenton, on Union River, when so many of his townsmen removed to that section of the now State of Maine.His name appears on a petition to His Excellency, Francis Bernard, of date Jan. 3, 1762, in which it was stated as follows:"We the subscribers, having been soldiers at Fort Pownall, and now settled at a place called Magebaggadeuce on the eastern side of Penobscot Bay, " etc.He acted a prominent part in the settlement of Trenton, and was appointed by the General Court to receive the bonds of the grantees.STAMP ACT" Embossed 2-Pence Cod Fish vignette Revenue Stamp, Scott Cat. RM2.The Colony of Massachusetts imposed a tax on certain documents by the Act of January 8, 1755 using Embossed revenues, while New York Colony imposed a similar tax between 1757 and 1760. The tax was in effect from May 1, 1755 to April 30, 1757. Stamps were issued in the following denominations: d, 2d, 3d, and 4d. The "Embossed" Revenue Stamp could be impressed upon ordinary paper; however, it was not possible to impress the stamp on vellum.
