Original Description:
MADAME CHIANG KAI-SHEK TYPED LETTER SIGNED, "Mayling Soong Chiang", 8.5 X 11, on her embossed letterhead, November 21, 1977, to William LaVarre, American explorer, author, and editor of American Mercury Magazine. In part: "...My recuperation from the nagging inconvenience from herpes roster [shingles] has taken all of two years...a friend of ours, former Ambassador William D. Pawley, committed suicide last year because of the unbearable pain...I agree with you that 1978 will... be a turbulent year. There are so many things in current affairs happening and continually unfolding in the world...the modern Vandals - Communists - would inundate the whole world...." This nice content letter is in fine condition, with minor paper clip stain at top left.William LaVarre (1898-1991) American explorer, author of many books on his expeditions in South America in the 1920's-1940's, including "Up the Mazaruni for Diamonds" (1919); "Gold, Diamonds, and Orchids" (1935); "Southward Ho! a Treasure Hunter in South America" (7 editions published between 1940-41). And most notably his editorship of American Mercury magazine in the 1950's. American Mercury was, at that time, owned by wealthy oilman, J. Russell Maguire, who used American Mercury to strongly support the Joseph McCarthy drive against Soviet "infiltration" of the U.S. government and promote anti-Semitic themes and arguments. When LaVarre became editor he focused most on what he thought were U.S. Government misdeeds and mistakes in both domestic and international actions. Many American Mercury articles reported news on the Civil War in China and most were strongly anti-communist in slant. LaVarre was strongly anti-communist in his writings and became friends with like-minded U.S. Military leaders and also International leaders like Madam Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalist Chinese after the Communist takeover of China.                                                                                                                                                                         William Douglas Pawley (September 7, 1896—January 7, 1977) was a U.S. ambassador, a noted businessman and associated with the Flying Tigers American Volunteer Group (AVG) during World War II. In 1933 he moved to China, where he became president of China National Aviation Corporation an airline running between Hong Kong and Shanghai. Pawley finally sold out to Pan Am again. He later assembled aircraft in partnership with the Chinese Nationalist government under the corporate name of Central Aircraft Manufacturing Company in Hnagzhou, Wuhan,  and finally Loiwing on the China-Burma border. (CAMCO was owned in partnership with the Chinese government, with the Pawley family interest represented by Intercontinent, which now served as a Pawley family holding company.) In 1941, with his brothers Edward and Eugene, he was involved with the organization and support of the 1st American Volunteer Group, popularly known as the Flying Tigers. On January 7, 1977, age 80, he committed suicide as a result of having lived for more than a year with the painful herpes roster (shingles).   #11578 Certificate of Authenticity This item has been authenticated and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by our parent company, History Makers Autographs.
