Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is a beautiful, finely carved clock; absolutely extraordinary and the details are unsurpassed. The clock is an 8 day model, lightly used, working, and sports a very nice, original mahogany finish. It was produced about 60 years ago in the Black Forest of "Triberg..., Germany" by "Hubert Herr, " one of the highest quality clock makers in this region of the world. The clock works very well here, cuckoos as it should, and keeps good time too. It is quite impressive, gorgeous on display, and equally impressive in size too measuring about 14" high (from the tip of the bird on top to the bottom of the grape branches on the bottom and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 10 1/2" or so across the top. The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden woodthat is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the BlackForest. It looks very much like an intricately carved grape vine with five, large, deeply carved wooden grape leaves on the front of the case. There is a hand carved, large wooden bird with a red glass eye perched in the grape vine atop the clock; very nice. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a set of matching, fancy hands to point out the time. There is a hinged wooden door on the right side of the case and it is secured with a metal latch. It is quite secure yet open to allow access to the clock movement in case any adjustments are ever needed from this angle. The clock has a wooden back secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the weight driven mechanical movement bearing the Hubert Herr name. A weight driven movementsimply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind theclock and cuckoo activities. The tall wooden bellow or whistle tubes are in goodshape and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in thedoorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled cathedral chime inside the case and when he's finished, the bird retreats back inside the clock, closingthe door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctlycuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock and closing the door; fascinating! Keep in mind that even though the clock looks fairly new, it is not. It is an old clock and we do not know the service history though the movement does show signs of having been maintained over the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its newhome. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preservethis classic clock and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comescomplete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a deeply carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metalweights. I've looked the clock over fairly well and only find very light signs of use and no damage or missing parts; absolutely gorgeous on display! This clock is certain to capture the imagination of any guests in yourhome, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, hand carved, 8 day German timepiece with a real legacy behind it.
