Very rare and stunningly beautiful, 1868 Chromolithograph Portrait of Civil War Commanding General and President of the United States Ulysses S. Grant issued during the Presidential Election of 1868.
This outstanding, Chromolithograph measures approx. 9” by 11” and is mounted in what appears to be its original, gold gilt surface Victorian Frame which measures approx. 11 3/4” by 14”. The Portrait of pictures Grant in the Uniform of Lieutenant General... in the Union Army and is taken from a photograph originally taken by George Andrews. The Image is signed by the artist – Alph. (Bryant)? - and dated 1868 in the plate. It is copyright by the lithographer / publisher A. L. Weise & Co. of Philadelphia.
While we have handled literally hundreds of 19th century, Ulysses S. Grant Photographs and Lithographs over the past 39+ years, we have never encountered this stunningly beautiful Chromolithograph before. The colors are dark and bold – rich and warn and the lithography is of the very highest quality. The Image is printed on a textured paper giving it the “look” of a fine oil painting. The scans below do not do justice to the quality and beauty of this outstanding Ulysses S. Grant Portrait.
This stunningly beautiful, 1868 Ulysses S. Grant Chromolithograph Portrait is in very good condition. The colors are dark and bold – rich and warm and the Image displays beautifully. The Lithograph is clean and crisp with a small light spot at the edge of the sheet to the right of Grant’s left elbow but no other visible damage of any kind. We have not examined the Image out of the frame but it appears that it may be slightly trimmed. The original Victorian Frame is also very well preserved with light surface wear.
