Very rare and important, 1865 Currier & Ives, Hand Colored Stone Lithograph depicting Union and Confederate forces at the Battle of Petersburg during the Civil War. This wonderful Civil War Battle Scene lithograph measures approx. 13 3/4" by 10” including visible margins on all sides (size of image area measures approx. 12 1/4" by 8").
The Image is fully titled: "The Battle of Petersburg, Va, April 2nd 1865" and subtitled "This great and decisive battle w...as fought on Sunday, between the Union heroes under General Grant, and the Rebel hosts under Lee; resulting in the total overthrow of the traitors, and the capture of both Petersburg and Richmond, with vast amounts of war material, and an estimated loss to the rebels of 15, 000 in killed and wounded, and 25, 000 prisoners, while the total Union loss is placed at less than 7000."
Depicted is close, hand to hand combat between massive forces of Union and Confederate troops. Dead and dying soldiers populate the foreground and there is an American Flag visible at the right and a Confederate Battle Flag at the left.
While this Image does not accurately portray any portion of the Battle of Petersburg, its importance lies in its stature as both a means of conveying the "news" of the Battle in pictorial form and as a propaganda device to promote confidence and support for the "cause" among the population of the North.
The Civil War Battle Scene Lithographs of Currier & Ives were published almost immediately after significant Battles and although newspapers reported the outcomes of Battles, it was the illustrations in Harper's Weekly and the Lithographs of Currier & Ives that delivered the "pictures" to the people in this time before "battle photography".
The Lithograph carries the mark of the Lithographers - Currier & Ives - and although it is not dated it was most certainly published in April of 1865.
This rare and fascinating, 1865 Civil War subject, hand colored, stone lithograph is in excellent condition. The Sheet is clean and and crisp and the colors bright and vibrant with no soiling, staining, physical damage or repairs of any kind. While we have not examined the Lithograph out of the frame, there are significant visible margins on all edges. Overall this original Currier & Ives, Civil War Battle scene is well preserved and displays beautifully.
